Estimate your monthly expenses in Norway based on your city and family situation
Our estimates are based on average prices observed in Norway, updated for the first quarter of 2026. Here is our approach:
The city multipliers reflect the price differences observed compared with Oslo, the most expensive city. For example, Trondheim is about 18% cheaper than Oslo for an overall budget.
Amounts in dollars and pounds are calculated at indicative rates of 1 USD = 9.43 NOK and 1 GBP = 12.62 NOK (November 2026). Rates vary; see our currency converter.
When you arrive in Norway, always plan for a budget 10 to 15% higher than your estimate. The first months cost more: housing deposit (often 3 months' rent), buying furniture, winter gear... Then, once you're settled, you'll find your own ways to save. My favourites: the Too Good To Go app for food, the loppemarkeder (flea markets) for furniture, and the bus rather than a taxi!
